Construction

US 101 - Elwha River Bridge

Description: WSDOT will replace the 1926, 388-foot concrete arch bridge over the Elwha River after successfully serving the community for more than 90 years in Clallam County. The new bridge will be 40 feet wide and sport two 12-foot lanes and two-8 foot shoulders. Additionally, improvements will be made to the US 101/Hot Springs Road intersection alignment including added illumination and turn lanes. Travelers are encouraged to stay informed with bridge inspections or construction announcements.

Lake Crescent Highway Rehab Project

Description: The National Park Service & Federal Highway Administration will rehabilitate 12 miles of Highway 101 around Lake Crescent and 4 miles of East Beach Road to address safety and long‐term maintenance issues.
Work schedule: Crews working for Olympic National Park are conducting erosion control, milling, paving and placing new guardrail. Four hour delays ended Thursday, May 23 and will resume September 3 to avoid excessive impacts on summer traffic. Final work, including paving, sign replacement and striping will take approximately 5 weeks to complete according to ONP and Federal Highway Adminstriation announcement

  • A daily two-hour delay on Highway 101 at Lake Crescent is scheduled for July 15, 16 and 17 from 9 am to 11 am. These delays are necessary for the final centerline striping of the new road surface. This work is weather dependent and will be postponed to July 22-24 if necessary.   • Work hours begin two hours after sunrise and two hours before sunset. Expect half-hour delays during weekday work hours, with short delays after-hours to accommodate one-way alternating traffic with a pilot car.

  • Expect 4-hour closures from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Monday through Thursday.

Description: Tepani Underground, a private contractor for Jamestown S'klallam Tribe is installing a sewer line for the Sequim Connection Sanitary Sewer Force Main Project. Majority of the work is off the shoulder of southbound US 101. Some work will require alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers. Night work may require closures on Monday and Tuesday nights after 9 p.m. beginning June 11 through November 4.
Work Schedule: 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday starting June 10 through Oct. 18.

SR 8, US 12 to W of Wilson Rd – Paving

Description: Crews will repair and repave several areas of SR 8 between Elma and Summit Lake in Thurston County. Drivers can expect daytime single-lane closures. The speed limit will reduce to 35 during work activities that require single-lane closures.
Work Schedule: The project will begin Monday, July 15 and continue into fall.

US 101/N of SR 107 - Stabilize Slope

Description: This section of US 101, also known as Cosi Hill, has a history of slides reoccurring under the highway. It has become not cost-effective to continue repaving the roadway until further earthwork can be done. This project aims to address just that. Crews will drill 6' diameter holes nearly 50' deep and fill in the remaining sections with rock in an effort to dramatically stabilize this stretch of highway. Drivers will encounter shifted lanes and reduced speeds during this two-season construction project. Project page. 
Work Schedule:  Drivers can now drive on recently paved asphalt; a single lane is each direction is open to drivers through fall of 2020 while slope stabilization efforts are underway. Also, the speed limit has been reduced to 25 mph during construction. A majority of the work takes place away from the roadway, however construction equipment will be entering/exiting the roadway on a semi-frequent basis. Any further closures will be announced in advance. 

US 101/Chehalis River Bridge - Scour Repair

Description: This project will have little to no impacts to motorists. Crews for WSDOT will work from the water to fill a scour hole beneath the concrete foundations and place loose rock around the columns to prevent further scour.
Work Schedule:  All work will occur via divers and from barges from early summer through fall 2019.

SR 107 - Chehalis River Bridge - Structural Rehabilitation and Bridge Painting

Description: This project replaces the timber on the south approach of the 58-year-old, SR 107 Chehalis River Bridge, while installing modern safety rails and painting the steel structure on the bridge. A rehabilitated bridge will reduce overall maintenance costs and preserve the bridge against corrosion. Project page. 
Work Schedule: The speed limit has been reduced from 40 mph to 25 mph between milepost 6.9 and 7.1 throughout the entirety of the project. Drivers entering the work zone will encounter one-way alternating traffc controlled by a temporary signal through fall 2020. Rognlin's Inc. crews working for WSDOT installed covered signs on US 101 and US 12 in preparation for upcoming detours that will take place for overheight and overweight semis and up to three weekend closures (which will be announced in advance) while crews perform deck work and raise the portals on the existing structure. Any upcoming closures will be announced in advance. Please contact Commercial Vehicle Services to determine if an alternate route is necessary.

  • Construction will begin summer 2019 and be complete by fall 2020.

Description: A private developer for the Quinault Tribe is making improvements to local streets adjacent to SR 109 in Hogan’s Corner. This includes intersection improvements, new turn lanes and utility relocation. While work is underway through fall, drivers should expect one-way alternating traffic, intermittent lane closures and occasional delays.
Work Schedule: 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. each Monday through Thursday through Monday, September 23, 2019.

US 101 - West Jefferson County - Remove Fish Barriers

Description: WSDOT will replace three outdated, damaged culverts that run under US 101 at Steamboat Creek, Harlow Creek and Fisher Creek between Queets and Kalaloch. The damaged culverts will be replaced with concrete girder bridges and are expected to open up nearly nine miles of potential fish habitat.
Work Schedule: A temporary 25 mph speed limit reduction is in place around the clock through fall of 2020. Drivers will encounter one-way alternating traffic with a signal at each culvert site. Any roadway closures will be announced in advance. View project web page.

SR 104 - Paradise Bay- Shine Road - Intersection Safety Improvement Project

Description: The intersection of SR 104 and Paradise Bay/Shine Roads in Jefferson County just west of the SR 104 Hood Canal Bridge has a history of serious injury-collisions for the nearly 17,000 travelers that frequent this stretch of highway each day. Within the last year, WSDOT took action and conducted an Intersection Control Evaluation of the site which considered safety needs, operational efficiencies and area traffic volumes with the goal of identifying improvements. The study recommendation was to build a single-lane roundabout when funding becomes available.

SR 116 - Kilisut Harbor - Remove Fish Barrier

Description: Beginning in summer 2019, Cascade Bridge, LLC crews working for WSDOT will begin construction on a 440-foot, two-lane concrete girder bridge spanning Kilisut Harbor just west of Marrowstone Island. The goal of this project, spearheaded by the North Olympic Salmon Coalition (NOSC) and funded by its partners, is to restore historic tidal channels and fish runs between southern Kilisut Harbor and Oak Bay in Jefferson County by creating approximately 2,300 acres of productive habitat in Puget Sound. Work Schedule: During construction, travelers should expect daytime delays as well as reduced speeds with one-way alternating traffic beginning late-July 2019 through fall 2020.  Any roadway closures will be announced in advance.
