Repaired I-90 overpass at the Tokio interchange re-opens at 6 p.m. tonight

RITZVILLE – More than a week ahead of schedule and much to the delight of Interstate 90 travelers and the local farming community, the Danekas Road overpass reopens tonight at 6 p.m. No additional detours and closures on both the overpass and I-90 are planned.

Contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation have finished repairs to this I-90 overpass which sustained over $500,000 in damages when it was struck July 10 by a vehicle carrying an oversize load. Replacement work closed the span to all traffic on Monday, Oct. 1. Since then, crews demolished the damaged portion, built a new span, reinstalled the railing and paved the deck.

In August, Gov. Jay Inslee signed an emergency proclamation for Adams County to help WSDOT expedite emergency repairs to the Danekas Road bridge and requested federal assistance to help cover costs. Repairing the bridge was important not only to local and I-90 travelers, but also to farmers who use the bridge to haul their loads to the area’s grain elevator.

By law, vehicle operators are responsible for knowing their vehicle height as well as bridge heights along their route. WSDOT’s online Bridge Vertical Clearance Trip Planner tool provides a way to map a route for over height vehicles. WSDOT is pursuing reimbursement costs from the freight hauler.
